By Erica Branda, Branda Communications I simply watched the thought-frightening 2009 TED Talk by novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie during which she warns of the hazards of representing any culture or particular person with a single story. It made me think about the stories we tell in fundraising. Are we painting the entire image? Are we lacking opportunities? According to the latest Statistics Canada survey on volunteering and charitable giving in Canada, eighty two% of Canadians make monetary donations, and the common level of giving is $531 per yr. Yet a quick (non-scientific) scan of the web sites of some of Canada’s larger non-profit organizations tells me that all donors are rich. We do a fantastic job of announcing million-dollar research chairs, big gifts for brand new services and huge company donations. Of course that is needed. These giant items characterize the majority of the dollars we increase, usually enable us to shed ligh t on something new and exciting in our organizations and are more than likely to be picked up by conventional media. But where is the story in regards to the 22-12 months-old lady working in an entry-stage job who deeply believes in your cause and has committed to donating $10 each month? What is motivating her to part with some of her restricted disposable revenue? There is likely something deeply compelling behind it and a story that will inspire donors of all styles and sizes. Social media offers us the opportunity to share these tales extensively and reveal how our organizations are relevant to a wide range folks. Publishing stories that contact the typical Canadian donor may help us tap into new networks and build stronger relationships with present donors. They say that your subsequent major donor is somebody who is already giving to you. Celebrating these individuals at present can have an enormous pay-off sooner or later.
